I have been in rock and roll all of my life and I admit it is a little tough to put Jimi Hendrix above Mick Jagger when it comes to brilliant rock and roll stardom. But right after watching several movies of both Jimi and Mick in concert, here is why I would do it:
The word genius is extremely overused and it's normally applied to folks who are really talented.
I argue with the dictionary when it equates genius with "exceptional intelligence", and what I believe the word genius is supposed to make reference to is actually a person who creates something that is new, and not just new, but dramatically new, important, and to some degree a milestone in human development.
I call Albert Einstein the premier genius of the people simply because the Theory of Relativity was a giant jump within the understanding of the way our universe functions and to this day, few individuals actually comprehend anything other than the bomb portion.
Jimi Hendrix was the master of rock and roll mainly because he was the only one who invented something new. It's virtually impossible to do anything that's really new within the field of music mainly because you'll find only eight notes within the Western scale so in a way, all music is derivative.
And yet Jimi invented guitar feedback and no one before Jimi even thought about it. And Jimi took his invention a step farther. Until Jimi came along, all music since the time of Mozart and Beethoven have been built on chord structure and rock music uses easy chord structure.
Jimi truly utilized feedback alone to develop song structure in some, but not all of his songs (Third Stone From the Sun). To this day, no one has been able to do what Jimi did. In fact, Jeff Beck purchased Jimi's strat at an auction and even the very talented Jeff admitted that he can't get the identical sounds out of the exact same guitar as Jimi.
With all due respect to Mick, he is a brilliant performer and one of the all time great rock and roll songwriters, but he's not really a brilliant musician simply because he only plays rhythm guitar.
I think Mick would concur with me about Jimi being a genius guitar player since Mick was one of the first ones to uncover Jimi when The Experience made their debut around the clubs of London.
Together with John Lennon, Mick spread the word to other British musicians about the new nova within the rock and roll sky.
