Panic disorders generally develop after a period of tension that you experienced. There are two reasons why this often happen.

During the crisis, the chemicals which are circulating in your body are designed to get you through. They include adrenalin, but you need to have that adrenalin. It gives you the energy to handle the extra load brought on by the crisis. In addition to physical energy, you should have mental energy, and if you are focusing on coping with the here and now you won't have any time for brooding and worrying.

As soon as the crisis is over, you are released from the need to deal with the instant troubles. You might still be overloaded with adrenalin, which you no longer need, and your mind will start to process what has happened and react to it.

You simply can't do anything about point number 1 - indeed you need that capability to rise to the moment, it's an essential human attribute.

The answer to point number 2 is to learn to look after your own self, to nurture yourself, as soon as the crises is over.

For many individuals an anxiety attack is the price they pay for not caring for themselves properly. It's as if a small voice within you has been asking for your attention, and when you overlook that voice it ultimately chooses to yell and shout, by hitting you with an anxiety attack, phobia or compulsion.

Despite this, many people feel guilty about taking care of themselves. These people put their work, their loved ones, their tasks at home ahead of their personal necessities. Are you one of them? There is no need to feel guilty about looking after yourself - if you do this, you will be more able to take care of others.
